Checkly vs Site24x7: Code-First Playwright or No-Code Recorder?
Checkly and Site24x7 both claim synthetic / transaction monitoring. They recruit opposite authors. Checkly assumes a developer writes Playwright. Site24x7 assumes an ops or QA person clicks through a recorder (Intelligent Capture) and ships a check without a repo.
If your team already lives in @playwright/test, Checkly is the natural production scheduler. If your team refuses TypeScript for monitors, Site24x7 (and the broader recorder camp with Pingdom / Uptime.com) is the honest fit. See best synthetic monitoring tools.
TL;DR
| Dimension | Checkly | Site24x7 |
|---|---|---|
| Authoring | Code (Playwright/TS) | No-code recorder |
| Engine | Playwright / Chromium | Chrome/Firefox (recorder flows) |
| Locations | ~22 public + private (Enterprise) | 130+ public + on-prem poller |
| Pricing | Per-run browser metering | Pooled advanced checks (~$10/10k) |
| MaC | CLI, Terraform, Pulumi | Weak / not the model |
| Visual / suite depth | Check Suites, high fidelity | Recorder ceiling |
| Best for | Engineering-owned monitors | Ops/QA-owned monitors |

Authoring is the product decision
Checkly:
import { test, expect } from "@playwright/test"; test("invite flow", async ({ page }) => { await page.goto("https://app.example.com/settings/team"); await page.getByRole("button", { name: "Invite" }).click(); await page.getByLabel("Email").fill("newhire@example.com"); await page.getByRole("button", { name: "Send invite" }).click(); await expect(page.getByText("Invite sent")).toBeVisible(); });
Site24x7's recorder builds steps by driving the UI. Self-healing capture helps when labels drift. Non-developers can own checks. The cost is workflow: little real config-as-code, no Terraform/CLI/MCP story comparable to Checkly, and poor fit for PR review of monitor changes beside application code.
Locations and pricing
Site24x7's public footprint (130+ locations) and on-prem poller beat Checkly on raw geography for global UX checks. Checkly's region list is strong for developer synthetics but is not a DEM last-mile network.
Pricing: Checkly per-run (~$4–6.50/1k) rewards sparse, important journeys. Site24x7 pools "advanced checks" (often discussed around ~$10/10k). Model both against your interval and location count; recorder tools tempt people to create more checks than they maintain.
Who should choose which
Choose Checkly when monitors must be code-reviewed, Playwright-native, and deployed from CI.
Choose Site24x7 when wide geography and click-to-record authoring matter more than gitOps.
Browser checks still need an API layer. DevHelm monitors endpoints and dependencies with flat pricing while your recorder or Playwright tool owns the journey. First monitor in about 60 seconds, no credit card.
