Checkly vs Sematext: Per-Run Playwright or Flat Per-Monitor Pricing?
Checkly and Sematext both offer Chromium/Playwright-class browser checks. The economic stories are opposites. Checkly charges for runs and invests in monitoring-as-code. Sematext charges a flat fee per browser monitor and keeps the synthetics surface thin.
This comparison shows up when finance asks for a number that does not move with interval × regions, while engineering asks for Check Suites. Category map: best synthetic monitoring tools.
TL;DR
| Dimension | Checkly | Sematext |
|---|---|---|
| Browser engine | Playwright + Check Suites | Playwright / Chromium |
| Pricing | ~$4–6.50 / 1k browser runs | ~$7 / browser monitor / month |
| Bill shape | Grows with frequency × locations | Flat per monitor |
| Interval floor | 30s on Team | 5 minutes (browser) |
| MaC | CLI, Terraform, Pulumi | Minimal for synthetics |
| Forensics | Strong suite/trace workflow | Thin (no video/HAR depth) |
| Private locations | Enterprise-leaning | Docker-based |
| Best for | Playwright-heavy teams | Small predictable fleets |
Fidelity vs simplicity
Checkly expects you to bring real Playwright:
import { test, expect } from "@playwright/test"; test("search returns results", async ({ page }) => { await page.goto("https://shop.example.com"); await page.getByRole("searchbox").fill("headphones"); await page.getByRole("button", { name: "Search" }).click(); await expect(page.getByTestId("result-count")).not.toBeEmpty(); });
Sematext can run Playwright/Chromium checks, but the product around them is lighter: no recorder, weak multi-step funnel metrics (last page bias), and little of Checkly's suite/fixture story. You buy "a browser monitor exists," not "our monorepo is the source of truth."

Pricing: the real fork
Sematext's ~$7/month per browser monitor (HTTP around ~$2) is the clearest predictable model in this category. Twenty browser monitors ≈ $140/month whether you check every 5 minutes or somehow denser inside their floors. No run spreadsheet.
Checkly is the opposite: one aggressive check schedule can outspend Sematext's whole fleet. A 30-second check from three regions is 259,200 runs/month. At $5/1k that is ~$1,300/month for a single journey. Checkly is rational when you need that cadence and fidelity; it is irrational as a "monitor everything aggressively" default.
Sematext's 5-minute browser floor is the trade: cheaper predictability, slower detection.
Developer surface
Checkly wins MaC outright (monitoring as code with CLI + Terraform + Pulumi). Sematext's synthetics story has essentially no Terraform/CLI/MCP depth. Docker private locations are a Sematext bright spot for teams that need internal vantage points without an enterprise sales cycle.
Who should choose which
Choose Checkly when Playwright suites and sub-5-minute detection matter more than invoice stability.
Choose Sematext when a handful of browser checks must cost a known monthly number and deep forensics/MaC do not.
Either way, cover APIs under the journey. DevHelm does flat-priced multi-region endpoint monitoring with assertions and config-as-code. First monitor in about 60 seconds, no credit card.
