Checkly vs Grafana Cloud (k6): Playwright Suites or OSS Free Tier?

DevHelm Team//10 min read

Checkly and Grafana Cloud Synthetic Monitoring both aim at scheduled outside-in checks, and both lean code-first. The engines differ. Checkly schedules Playwright. Grafana schedules k6 (with a Playwright-to-k6 conversion path) on top of the broader Grafana Cloud stack.

If you already ship Playwright in CI and want that same suite in production, Checkly is the smaller leap. If you want a large free allotment, OSS k6 locally, and synthetics next to Grafana dashboards, Grafana Cloud is the cheaper experiment. Category context: best synthetic monitoring tools.

Engine and authoring

Checkly's pitch is simple: the monitor is your Playwright test.

import { test, expect } from "@playwright/test";

test("login works", async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto("https://app.example.com/login");
  await page.getByLabel("Email").fill(process.env.SYNTHETIC_EMAIL!);
  await page.getByRole("button", { name: "Sign in" }).click();
  await expect(page.getByText("Dashboard")).toBeVisible();
});

Grafana's browser checks use the k6 browser module. Same job (assert on rendered UI), different API:

import { browser } from "k6/browser";
import { check } from "k6";

export const options = {
  scenarios: {
    ui: {
      executor: "shared-iterations",
      options: { browser: { type: "chromium" } },
    },
  },
};

export default async function () {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto("https://app.example.com/login");
  await page.locator('button:has-text("Sign in")').click();
  check(page, {
    dashboard: (p) => p.locator("text=Dashboard").isVisible(),
  });
  await page.close();
}

Grafana can convert many Playwright scripts toward k6. Conversion is not zero-cost: selectors, fixtures, and suite structure often need hand work. Checkly runs Playwright with less translation.

Neither product is a point-and-click recorder camp. Checkly has no recorder. Grafana's k6 Studio lives outside the cloud UI.

Pricing and free tier

Grafana Cloud wins the "start for free" column: 100,000 API and 10,000 browser executions per month (plus VU-hours for load) without a card. That is enough to prove a handful of journeys. Past the free tier, browser pricing climbs (~$50 per 10,000 class pricing, billed in a per-probe-per-minute shape that teams often find opaque).

Checkly Hobby gives 1,000 browser runs/month. Starter and Team are per-run (~$4–6.50/1k) with separate bills for status pages and AI RCA. Busy 30-second multi-region browser fleets get expensive on both platforms; Checkly's meter is easier to spreadsheet, Grafana's free tier is easier to start.

Browser interval floors matter for detection latency: Checkly Team can do 30 seconds; Grafana Cloud's browser floor is typically 60 seconds.

Ecosystem fit

Pick Grafana when Prometheus/Loki/Tempo (or Grafana Cloud IRM) is already home. Synthetics become another signal on dashboards you already open. Pick Checkly when the reliability surface should stay a focused synthetics product with a Playwright deploy loop, not another Grafana module.

Checkly's Terraform + CLI story is built around checks as the primary object. Grafana's Terraform and k6 CLI are strong, and the authoring MCP is a real differentiator for AI-assisted script work, but you are adopting Grafana Cloud operationally, not a boutique synthetics vendor.

Who should choose which

Choose Checkly if Playwright suites, fixtures, and sub-minute schedules are the requirement, and you will pay per run for that fidelity.

Choose Grafana Cloud if the free tier covers you, your team already speaks k6 or Grafana, and a 60-second browser floor is acceptable.

Still cover the API layer. Browser red alerts without endpoint assertions leave you guessing. Pair either tool with API monitoring underneath. DevHelm is built for that layer: multi-region HTTP/DNS/SSL checks, flat pricing, CLI and Terraform, status page from the same data. First monitor in about 60 seconds, no credit card.
