Checkly vs Catchpoint: Developer Synthetics or Enterprise DEM?
Checkly and Catchpoint both appear on "synthetic monitoring tools" SERPs, and both can run Playwright-class browser journeys. They are not substitutes for the same buyer. Checkly is a self-serve, developer-centric synthetics SaaS. Catchpoint (under LogicMonitor) is enterprise Internet Performance Monitoring: backbone and last-mile nodes, network path visibility, and quote-driven contracts.
If you are an eng team choosing a Playwright scheduler, Catchpoint is usually the wrong shortlist. If you are a global DEM/RUM procurement, Checkly is usually too small. Context: best synthetic monitoring tools.
TL;DR
| Dimension | Checkly | Catchpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer | Engineering / platform | Enterprise DEM / digital experience |
| Motion | Self-serve + Enterprise | Sales-led / points packages |
| Browser | Playwright suites as code | Playwright on Catchpoint nodes |
| Vantage points | ~22 public regions (+ private) | Thousands of backbone/last-mile/cloud agents |
| Entry price | Hobby $0; Starter ~$24/mo | CX package from ~$10k/yr; IPM often much higher |
| Network path (BGP/DNS/CDN) | Not the pitch | Core pitch |
| MaC | CLI, Terraform, Pulumi | Portal + scripts; not Checkly-depth MaC |
| Best for | Code-first synthetics | Global DEM + network insight |

What each optimizes
Checkly optimizes for "the same Playwright test runs in CI and in production."
import { test, expect } from "@playwright/test"; test("checkout", async ({ page }) => { await page.goto("https://shop.example.com"); await page.getByRole("button", { name: "Add to cart" }).click(); await expect(page.getByText("Order confirmed")).toBeVisible({ timeout: 15000, }); });
Catchpoint optimizes for "how does this journey perform from ISP X in city Y, and what did the network path do?" Playwright support lets you bring scripts onto that node fabric. BGP, DNS, CDN, and internet weather style insights are why enterprises pay. Developer gitOps is not why they pay.
Pricing
Checkly: public tiers, per-run overages, optional Enterprise. A mid-market team can start in a day.
Catchpoint: Customer Experience Quick Start packaging from roughly $10,000/year on public pricing pages; full IPM deployments commonly land in mid five to six figures annually depending on nodes and modules (third-party deal data varies widely). There is no meaningful Hobby competitor to Checkly for a five-person startup.
Who should choose which
Choose Checkly for Playwright MaC, fast self-serve setup, and engineering-owned synthetic coverage.
Choose Catchpoint when last-mile/backbone diversity and network-path forensics justify enterprise DEM spend.
Most product teams still need cheap, assertive API monitoring under either. DevHelm handles that outer/dependency layer at flat pricing. First monitor in about 60 seconds, no credit card.
