Checkly vs Better Stack: Playwright Depth or On-Call Bundle?
Checkly and Better Stack both run Playwright/Chromium browser checks, and both sell to teams that outgrew HTTP pings. They solve different jobs after that. Checkly is a code-first synthetics platform built around Playwright suites, a CLI, and Terraform. Better Stack is a monitoring-plus-incident bundle where browser checks sit next to on-call, status pages, and logs.
If your purchase trigger is "run our Playwright suite against production," Checkly is the sharper tool. If the trigger is "one vendor for checks, pages, and who gets woken up," Better Stack is usually the shorter path. For the wider field, see best synthetic monitoring tools.
TL;DR
| Dimension | Checkly | Better Stack |
|---|---|---|
| Browser engine | Playwright, Check Suites, fixtures | Playwright/Chromium transactions |
| Authoring | TypeScript as code (no recorder) | JS code or codegen paste |
| Pricing model | Per-run (+ separate status/AI products) | Per Playwright-minute + $29/responder seat |
| Browser list price | ~$4–6.50 / 1k runs | ~$1 / 100 Playwright-minutes |
| On-call | Webhooks to PagerDuty/Opsgenie | Native rotations + escalation |
| Locations | ~22 public regions | 4 regional groups (US, EU, Asia, Australia) |
| MaC surface | CLI, Terraform, Pulumi | Terraform + API |
| Best for | Code-first Playwright teams | Small teams wanting one ops bundle |
Playwright fidelity
Checkly treats Playwright as the product. Multi-file suites, fixtures, stored auth state, and Check Suites that reuse your CI tests are first-class. A monitor looks like the test you already run in CI:
import { test, expect } from "@playwright/test"; test("checkout confirms", async ({ page }) => { await page.goto("https://shop.example.com/checkout"); await page.getByRole("button", { name: "Pay now" }).click(); await expect(page.getByText("Order confirmed")).toBeVisible({ timeout: 15000, }); });
Better Stack runs real Chromium with Playwright-style scripts, often pasted from codegen. That is enough for login and checkout journeys. It is not Checkly's suite depth: no Check Suites model, weaker fixture story, and synthetics are one monitor type inside a broader Uptime product rather than the center of gravity. Visual regression is a Checkly Team/Enterprise story; Better Stack does not match that layer.
Pick Checkly when fidelity to an existing Playwright repo is non-negotiable. Pick Better Stack when a few scripted journeys plus the rest of the stack matter more than suite parity.

Pricing
Checkly bills browser checks per run (~$4–6.50 per 1,000 depending on provisioned vs overage). Detect, Communicate (status pages), and Resolve (AI RCA) are separate meters. A single browser check every 30 seconds from three regions is 259,200 runs/month. At ~$5/1k that is roughly $1,300/month for one journey before status pages or AI.
Better Stack bills Playwright time ($1 per 100 Playwright-minutes) on top of a required responder seat ($29/mo). Short checks stay cheap; long, chatty journeys and many seats push the bill. There is no per-run sticker the way Checkly publishes, but the seat floor means a three-person on-call rotation has a hard monthly base before synthetics volume.
Model both at your real interval × regions × journey duration. Per-run and per-minute both punish "check everything every 30 seconds" habits. Synthetic monitoring best practices covers how to keep intervals sane.
On-call, status pages, and forensics
Better Stack's clearest win is incident workflow: native on-call, escalation policies, and a status page in the same product. Checkly alerts well (Slack, webhooks, PagerDuty, Opsgenie) but does not replace an on-call tool. Status pages and AI RCA on Checkly are separate paid products.
On failure, both can give you Playwright-shaped evidence. Checkly's developer workflow around traces and suite runs is deeper. Better Stack's trace-viewer artifacts are solid for a bundled tool. Neither replaces a full APM correlation story.
Locations and MaC
Checkly exposes many discrete public regions and a serious private-location story on Enterprise. Better Stack's four regional groups are coarse: fine for "US vs EU," weak for city-level or last-mile questions.
Checkly's CLI (checkly test / checkly deploy), Terraform, and Pulumi are the category reference for monitoring as code. Better Stack ships Terraform and an API; it does not match Checkly's Playwright-native deploy loop.
Who should choose which
Choose Checkly if your team already owns Playwright in CI, wants monitors in the same repo as the app, and can forecast per-run spend. Accept that on-call and polished status pages are other vendors (or Checkly add-ons).
Choose Better Stack if you want monitoring, on-call, and status pages on one bill, can live with coarser locations, and will author a handful of browser journeys rather than a full Playwright monorepo.
Choose neither alone if the failure mode you care about is "which API or vendor broke under the journey." Browser checks say the flow is red. They do not say /payment-intent returned 500 because Stripe degraded. Layer API monitoring and uptime checks underneath. DevHelm covers that outer layer with flat pricing, config-as-code, and a status page driven by the same monitors. First monitor in about 60 seconds, no credit card.
