Why People Leave Uptime Kuma

The recurring pain points that drive teams to look for an alternative.

01

You are the on-call team for your monitoring stack

Self-hosted Uptime Kuma means Docker image updates, data-directory backups, database maintenance, and troubleshooting when the monitoring server itself goes unreachable — often during the outage you most need alerts. If your VPS shares a region with the services it monitors, a provider outage takes down both your app and your ability to detect it. DevHelm is fully managed with external probing from 4 regions.

02

No monitors-as-code or PR review workflow

Uptime Kuma stores configuration in a local database edited through the dashboard. The project ships no official CLI, Terraform provider, or YAML config format. Write operations require a Socket.IO client — a REST API for monitor CRUD is still an open feature request. DevHelm defines monitors in YAML or HCL, validates in PRs, and deploys with `devhelm deploy -f devhelm.yml --yes`.

03

Single-user model — no team RBAC or audit trail

Uptime Kuma is built around a single admin account with optional 2FA. There are no workspaces, role-based access controls, or audit logs for who changed a monitor or silenced an alert. Teams sharing one login or bolting authentication in front of a reverse proxy is a common friction point. DevHelm includes workspace-based team access on every tier.

04

Single-region probing unless you run multiple instances

A default Uptime Kuma instance probes from wherever you host it. Multi-region external monitoring requires running separate instances in different datacenters with no built-in synchronization. DevHelm probes from 4 managed regions by default — no second VPS to maintain for basic geographic diversity.

05

v2 removed JSON export — no easy migration path

Uptime Kuma v2 deprecated and removed the JSON backup/export feature from Settings. The only supported backup is copying the entire data directory while the container is stopped. There is no official exporter to recreate monitors elsewhere. Teams outgrowing self-hosting must inventory monitors manually from the dashboard.

When Uptime Kuma Is the Right Call

Not every team needs to switch. Stay with Uptime Kuma if:

  • You want $0 software and already run a homelab or VPS — Uptime Kuma on existing hardware is hard to beat on raw cost.
  • Full data sovereignty matters — your monitor config and uptime history never leave your infrastructure.
  • You rely on Docker container health checks or Steam Game Server monitoring — DevHelm does not offer these monitor types.
  • You have already deployed Uptime Kuma, love the UI, and ops burden is acceptable for your current scale.

Switching from Uptime Kuma

There is no official importer from Uptime Kuma. Uptime Kuma v2 removed JSON backup/export — the supported backup is copying the data directory while stopped. Most teams inventory monitors from the dashboard, recreate them as DevHelm YAML or Terraform, and run both tools in parallel before cutting over.

1

Inventory your Uptime Kuma monitors

Open the Uptime Kuma dashboard and export your monitor list manually — name, type, URL/host, interval, and notification assignments. v2 no longer supports JSON export from Settings; do not rely on deprecated backup files.

2

Map monitor types to DevHelm

HTTP, ping, DNS, TCP, and push/heartbeat monitors map directly to DevHelm monitor types. Docker container checks, Steam Game Server monitors, and WebSocket checks have no DevHelm equivalent — keep those on Uptime Kuma or replace with HTTP health endpoints.

3

Recreate monitors in DevHelm

Define monitors in YAML or Terraform. Set check intervals, probe regions, and alert channels. Validate the config before deploying.

devhelm validate -f devhelm.yml
4

Deploy with the CLI

Plan first to verify the config, then deploy. Future changes go through git and CI.

devhelm plan -f devhelm.yml && devhelm deploy -f devhelm.yml --yes
5

Run in parallel and cut over

Keep Uptime Kuma and DevHelm monitoring the same endpoints for 48 hours. Once DevHelm is catching incidents reliably, disable Uptime Kuma monitors and update notification routing. Decommission the VPS when ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a managed Uptime Kuma alternative?▾
Yes. DevHelm is a managed SaaS uptime monitor with 50 free monitors (commercial use allowed), 4-region external probing, bundled status pages, and first-party CLI, Terraform, Python SDK, and JS/TS SDK. You skip VPS hosting, backups, and monitoring-the-monitor entirely.
How much does an Uptime Kuma alternative cost?▾
Uptime Kuma software is free, but production setups typically need $5–15/mo in VPS hosting plus your time for maintenance. DevHelm Free is $0 for 50 hosted monitors with a custom-domain status page. DevHelm Starter is $12/mo for 75 monitors with 1-minute checks and multi-region probing — often comparable to a single VPS without the ops burden.
Can I migrate from Uptime Kuma to DevHelm?▾
Yes, but there is no official importer. Uptime Kuma v2 removed JSON export — inventory monitors from the dashboard, recreate them as DevHelm YAML or Terraform, validate with `devhelm validate`, and deploy with `devhelm deploy -f devhelm.yml --yes`. Most teams run both tools in parallel for 48 hours before cutting over.
Does DevHelm support monitors-as-code?▾
Yes. DevHelm has a first-party Terraform provider, a 73-command CLI, Python and JS/TS SDKs, and a GitHub Action. Define monitors in YAML or HCL, PR-review them, and deploy in CI/CD. Uptime Kuma has no official IaC tooling — configuration lives in a database edited through the UI.
When is Uptime Kuma the better choice?▾
Uptime Kuma is a good fit when you already run a homelab or VPS, want $0 software with full data sovereignty, or rely on Docker container and Steam Game Server checks. For teams that also need managed multi-region probing, team workspaces with RBAC, and monitors-as-code without operating the monitoring server themselves, DevHelm covers those as hosted SaaS — with Uptime Kuma you are on-call for your own monitoring stack.
What Uptime Kuma features does DevHelm not have?▾
Uptime Kuma offers $0 unlimited self-hosted monitors, 20-second check intervals on your hardware, 90+ notification integrations, Docker container health checks, and full data sovereignty. DevHelm is hosted SaaS — you trade self-hosting control for managed multi-region probing, team workspaces, and monitors-as-code. DevHelm does not monitor Docker containers or Steam Game Servers directly.
